Gaps in the rubber allow the lagging excess space to bend and move with the conveyor belt. The increased flexibility allows the rubber to maintain contact with the same part of the belt and prevents the belt from sliding. And the diamond grooved rubber lagging can drop water off the pulley, further get the belt away from slipping and material build up.
